Recreation Activities in the Armidale Region
New England Art Museum (NERAM)
Armidale offers activities for people from all walks of life. There are art galleries and museums, cinemas, theatres, many fantastic cafes, bars and restaurants and of course a strong sporting culture. Armidale is home to an 18 hole, par 72 golf course, 22 different sporting grounds and venues and numerous sporting clubs ranging from netball and rugby union all the way to ultimate frisbee and underwater hockey. Armidale is also at the centre of the Northern trout fishing region, and a 45 minute drive can have you fishing on a picturesque trout stream.
Ebor Falls
One of Armidale’s best kept secrets is that there are four national parks, each with extraordinary natural attractions, all within an hour’s drive from the city centre. There’s a monumental tumble of giant granite boulders to climb in the Cathedral Rock National Park. And, along the aptly named Waterfall Way, Ebor Falls in the Guy Fawkes River National Park is one of several majestic waterfalls to admire. Much of the extensive wilderness in the New England and Oxley Wild Rivers National Parks is World Heritage listed. Enjoy spectacular gorges, encounter dramatic waterfalls and marvel at hundreds of kilometres of pristine waterways
Mother Of Ducks Lagoon Nature Reserve
Guyra offers a unique blend of recreational activities and facilities from excellent trout fishing, bird watching, fossicking, bush walking, museums, gorgeous parks and picnic areas. The main street has a fantastic array of speciality and boutique stores as well as great cafès that offer a wide selection of locally grown produce. If sport is more your style, Guyra offers something for you too! There are many playing fields, tennis courts, a swimming pool, bowling greens and a golf course. Guyra’s most famous event is the annual lamb and Potato festival which celebrates the area’s rich agricultural history and allows everyone to sample some of Guyra’s fabulous produce. The festival is a drawcard for many tourists and locals love to show off their gorgeous town.
With the lagoons and spectacular waterfalls, Guyra offers a unique natural environment. The Mother of Ducks Lagoon is in a silted volcano some 14 km in circumference. It is a valuable high altitude wetland and attracts many varieties of bird species from here and overseas. New England National Park is a World Heritage listed park for bushwalkers, sightseers and campers. Walking tracks range from half-day to full day treks. Point Lookout offers spectacular views over the escarpment and panoramas to the north, east and south.
